Enucleation....

Procedure

Enucleation is a surgical procedure to remove the eyeball from the socket. It is normally performed once irrepairable damage has to occurred to the eye & there is no chance of restoring or repairing sight.

Mylo's op 2007

13Jan We checked Mylo into surgery at 8.30am for his operation and collected

him the same day, very drowsy. An elizabethan collar had to be handmade

because he was so tiny there were none his size! A course of antibiotic

tablets were given to him to prevent infection. It was amazing that as soon

as we got home it didnt take long for his drowsiness to wear off and he

was up and eating and drinking, even with the funnel on!!! When we did

take off the collar we had to watch him like a hawk though as he did keep

trying to rub the wound with his paw and clean it.

15Jan Check-up ophthalmology appointment - all looking good!

17Jan Vet checked bubble that had formed on wound - just part of healing tissue.

20Jan Bloody, watery discharge from his left nostril, as expected after

enucleation. This was gently wiped away with cotton wool, when Mylo

  wasn't licking it.

30Jan Mylo's eye socket had swollen up and we whisked him back to the surgery

as the skin around the sutures had stretched and had a yellowish tinge. An

abscess full of pus had developed inside the socket, which could have

been a reaction to the suture material or a consequence of the problems he

had with his eye before the op.

31Jan The ophthalmologist removed his stitches and gently pressed on the socket

to drain it of pus. Poor Mylo cried out as the pus released (sorry too much info!)

and it flooded down his face and all over the vet table. The opthalmologist

actually asked "are you going to be sick?" and I thought he was talking to Mylo

until I realised he was talking to me! I had turned a nice shade of white! I was

told his wound might bleed a little at home and sure enough it dripped all over

the floor, but this stopped after an hour or so. We had directions to continue

draining the pus at home with salt water and cotton wool, and sweetie Mylo was

so good, he didn't complain once as he was so used to his eye being nursed. I

have to admit I thought I would be too queusy to do it, but I guess you just ignore

your feelings and force yourself as you know it has to be done! He was put on

another course of antibiotics and the fluid stopped draining after a couple of

days and his eye began to heal. And Mylo was on the road to recovery.
