Enucleation is a surgical procedure to remove the eyeball from the socket. It is normally performed once irrepairable damage has to occurred to the eye & there is no chance of restoring or repairing sight.

Mylo's op 2007

13Jan 8.30am Mylo's op. Collected him same day, very drowsy. An elizabethan

collar had to be handmade because he was so tiny there were none his

size! Antibiotic tabs given. Bless him, he was up and eating and drinking

as soon as we got home, even with the funnel on. He had to be watched

like a hawk as he kept trying to rub the wound and clean it.

15Jan Check-up ophthalmology appointment.

17Jan Vet checked bubble that had formed on wound - just part of healing tissue.

20Jan Bloody, watery discharge from his left nostril, as expected after

encucleation. This was gently wiped away with cotton wool, when Mylo

  wasn't licking it.

30Jan Eye socket had swollen up. Abscess had developed inside socket full of pus, which could have been a reaction to the suture material or a

consequence of the problems he had with his eye before the op.

31Jan Ophthalmologist removed stitches and drained socket of pus by gently

pressing on socket. Poor Mylo cried out when it poured down his face and

all over the vet table - and I did too! When we got home it had filled with

blood which dripped all over the floor, but this stopped after an hour or so.

Had directions to continue draining the pus at home with salt water and

cotton wool, and Mylo was so good and he didn't complain once, the little

sweetheart, since he was so used to his eye being nursed. He was put on another course of antibiotics. Fluid stopped draining after a couple of days

and his eye began to heal.
