WHat happened??

Histopathology report

Please note it was confirmed that the cause was definately NOT a knock to the head!! He had no neurological symptoms and did not require a brainscan! the report supports he was definately not dropped or banged.

During the enucleation, Mylo's eye was carefully removed & sent to histopathology.

This is an actual photo of one of the cross-sections of Mylo's eye.

Results

Stromal cells dislodged indicating a sharp penetration. But no mark left on surface of eye.Lens completely intact. No evidence of bacterial infection.Eye filled with pus.Damage to eye irreversible.Mylo had no sight in eye at stage of enucleation.

Interpretation

There were several anomalies which arose from the report. Firstly it being very unusual no mark was left on the surface of the eye from a penetration. The ophthalmologist felt this could have been a result of something very sharp, such as a cats claw (but Mylo is our first and only cat). Secondly, a penetration does not normally lead to destruction within the eye....it would normally heal, unless:

  a) there was infection introduced or

  b) the lens had been damaged, causing lens proteins to be released so initiating an immune response against the own tissues.

But no infection was identified and the lens was completely in tact. So why did Mylo have such a severe reaction? Further investigation and cross-sections of the eye which were performed, unfortunately did not shed any more light on the answer. And the conclusion remains that it was caused by a sharp penetration which led to mass damage.

And what about the cataract identified in his remaining eye? May this be somehow related to the reaction Mylo had?..see "good eye?" page.

Mylo's case was discussed at the 2007 veterinary ophthalmology conference.
